River Swale is based at Home Farm, Newby Wiske, where Peter and Joanne Richardson are the third generation to farm. Together with a group of local farmers we grow enough varieties to fill boxes with an interesting mix of seasonal organic veg. You have six boxes to choose from and can add extra vegetables and fruit, dairy, eggs, juice, wine & beer (we will be adding to this range over the coming months). Everything is sourced as locally as possible, and we always choose produce from organic and ethical sources. We never use airfreight.
Going organic has revived our love of producing food and our pleasure in looking after the land. We see the boxes as way of sharing this enjoyment with customers, and making sure the fantastic vegetables local growers produce are eaten close to home.
Think of us as your allotment - without the digging
We believe that growing organically benefits everyone - but most of all we want you to enjoy eating what we grow. Judging by what customers tell us, there are four good reasons for getting a box from us...
The flavour of our veg is what most customers rave about. We put this down to:
- freshness - our vegetables come straight from the fields into the barn, are packed and on your doorstep the next day
- the varieties we grow - we run lots of trials and choose varieties for flavour, not for the cosmetic and handling qualities so important to supermarkets
- the range of produce - we grow a big range of crops to keep your box interesting all year round - and extend your cooking repertoire
It's staightforward and flexible
Delivery is free - but more important, our service is friendly and reliable. You manage your account online, or can call us six days a week. You are not tied in any way. You can order as often as you like, change your box as often as you like - or set up a fixed weekly or fortnightly order if you prefer. Find out how the scheme works.
If you can set up a weekly or fortnightly order it does help us plan cropping.
Knowing where food comes from
Everything we grow is organic. Our newsletter will keep you in touch with the farm. We think hard about the decisions we make - about the environment, food miles, local economy, packaging. Find out more about how we run our business.
It's affordable
We want everyone to share our enthusiasm for fresh, organic produce. New customers are often surprised at how affordable organic can be, especially if you eat seasonally. By growing the veg ourselves and delivering it direct to your doorstep we can keep costs down – as well as keeping everything fresh.
